Sup guys, this has nothing to do with EQ. Just a prob i am haveing now with my Upgraded macs to panther. Wondering if anyone has a solution.

I own G4 dual 1.25 and G4 1ghz, and just upgraded them to 10.3 Now i lost the ability to have both macs on my router. When one is installed i can connect to the net just fine. But when both are connected they are haveing DHCP problems. Keeps telling me that i need to connect my ethernet wires. But thing is i dont have air port station or cards in them, so the DHCP fix on the apple boards arent helping me.

Now when i had 10.2.8 running on both macs, i had no prob what so ever. Either leads me to think the lynksys router needs a firmware update for panther, or panther need to fix this bug.

Anyone else haveing trouble like this? or know a solution? I have seen issues like this after updates where settings for the router have been corrupted in the process of the update. I would suggest first making sure it is set to autonegotiate just to save yourself some hassle. If it is and you still have issues then I would set it up from scratch, if your still having issues then I would contact Linksys for any possible updates or known issues. If your having issues after that contact Apple with your 90days of support on that 10.3 software you purchased.
Ya i have done all that, but its not the router. Just did a ton of reading on the apple boards, and it seems that panther is haveing the same problems the first 10.2.8 update did. And found tons of diccussions on the apple boards, that people are haveing the same problems as me. So guess i just have to wait it out now till someone finds the problems and knows how to fix it.

Far as i know apple has issued a update for panther, but dunno when its comming out now.

If you have not called Apple I would suggest doing so just to make sure that there is not something they can do for you that is not on the boards.

It is odd... If I come across anything that will help ill let you know.
10.3 was faster at first, but lately it has been as low as shit on a cold day. lots of random freezes and slowdowns that last as long as 2 minutes, brograms not launching (not responding). XCode crashing on me... seems like they pushed this out the door too early.
Did you do an archive install or a straight upgrade?

Tofu - Dorf Paladin Extraordinaire
Magelo Profile
Master Smith (188)Master Potter (162)Master Cook (135)Master Tailor (158)Master Brewer (187)Master Fletcher (182)Master Jeweler (183)
Straight upgrade. Was no need to archive anything, since the HD i use for OSX has nothing important on it to be archived. Dont store anything on my OS HD, due to past issues where i lose a HD and everything with it.

Main mac is
G4 dual 1.25ghz
1.25 ram

2 Seagate 30gig SCSI
1 Seagate 80gig ATA
1 Seageta 40gig ATA

So i have one scsi as my main HD for OSX and apps. Other HDs are where i store everything. Just glad my ATTO card still worked after the install.

Archive stores your user preferences and installs a clean copy of the OS with your preferences. Doesn't touch your files. Many people have had issues in the past with straight upgrades. I always prefer an archive installation. It preserves your settings and takes up a tiny bit more hard drive but you know there was no issues replacing old OS files. If you have the spare space on the drive it might be worth a shot.

Tofu - Dorf Paladin Extraordinaire
Magelo Profile
Master Smith (188)Master Potter (162)Master Cook (135)Master Tailor (158)Master Brewer (187)Master Fletcher (182)Master Jeweler (183)
Well only reason i dont do archive installs anymore is in 10.1.6 to 10.2 and has the most amazing problems. Got double icons on desktop, kernal panics out the ass etc..

but that might have been 10.2 problems.

This upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.3 was smooth as hell, and i have no problems at all. Everything is running smooth and fast on my macs. All adobe programs are running a ton better. Only problem is the DHCP when two macs are hooked up to the router. But when only one is hooked up its perfect.

But here is a link and you will see others haveing the same problem as me.

http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?14@241.BbXqaMjpiDJ.3@.599b4611

But i agree with cads, i think they pushed it out to fast. That whole prob with 10.2.8 and being pulled off the web site a few weeks ago must have been a omen!!!!

Ya hold off till this is fixed Clarity, seems like more and more people are having network/DHCP/net problems as the days go on. Havent had a chance to call apple yet, but called some old collage buddies on this prob. They more mac nuts then me and we are all stumped.

So if your system is running fine with 10.2.8 stick with it for now. My guess is a week or so a fix will come out. Took about that long when the first 10.2.8 prob occured with this simular problem.

While I have not experienced the problem you are speaking about myself Vance, I would be willing to bet, just as Tofu said, that it stems from the upgrade install.

We have to just keep saying it... Never do an upgrade install. Nearly ever single person that has "weird" issues with Panther did an upgrade install.

One simple and fast remedy, provided you have about 4 gigs free on your OS HD. Do an archive install, making sure that the "preserve user settings" is checked. You can do that right now, and in under 15 minutes you will have a working system, exactly like you left it.

The reason that upgrade is still the default by apple is that it is less intrusive for ppl that have 3rd party drivers installed. If you have a mouse or special third party driver installed, you will have to reinstall it. Same with special printer drivers, unless they installed into your home directory.

Go home, archive install on both of your computers, and I would be willing to bet that your your DHCP troubles go away.

Clarity: Just do what Tofu, Elindil, Jkaru, and myself suggest... archive install and you will be happy and in good shape.

Apul

P.S. I am sure Nikolai would charm in on the evils of Upgrade installs too.

P.S.S. It was our secret plan to screw with the Jersey-boy. That is why we did not tell him early. And if any of us suddenly disappear, it was one of his family members!
Easy answer, don't DHCP your macs. From my days as a network installer, 9.1 up to present, I've never seen DHCP run 100% correctly on Mac, there'd always be one or two troublesome machines that refuses to negotiate it's IP, I just manually assign all my local network IPs at home so I never run into this problem.

I just use an IP range of 192.168.0.1 thru .16, subnet mask 255.255.255.240, assign the router .1, then just number off the machines after that (got 5-6 that run on the router at one time).

Never had a problem, yeah, it takes a few more minutes initially, but saves a lot of headaches, IMO.

Thx for the input Azure, but i did that allready. Stil not connecting with two macs running panther on the network.

I tried manual IPs out da wazooo, and nadda. I upgraded this morning, using the archive and install method as recommended. Immediately after, I became unable to log into any of my characters once I zoned once. I was still able to log in and use them from another machine, but EQ would crash when I tried to load any of the characters I had used under 10.3. I did a complete reinstall of EQ, and that seemed to fix it.

Now, it's doing the same thing again, but it compounded by thinking that I'm still logged in for 15 minutes after each attempt.

This completely blows.

-- Bastette of Medivh
-- Bastette of Al'Kabor
Fixed my problem.

Turns out that when both macs are only pluged into the 5 port HUB uplinked from the 4 port router everything runs smooth. But when both macs in the router and one mac in router one in hub nothings works. How the hell this is the case is beyond me. I used to have both macs on the router in 10.2.8, and one PC on the 5 port hub and worked fine. Seems that panther doesnt like the router at all when multiple macs are hooked up to it. DHCP finds IP with no prob now, and all the Computers see net fine. Only need to see if the PC see the G4 server now.

Old friend of mine has done the same set up as me, and found the same problem. But when we set it up like this, everything works. From what I have read the autoswitching on some of the routers and OSX are not playing well togeather.. that is why Vance was able to move his conections to his hub to get it to work.

Check to make sure that the router is Auto Switching ... If it is stuck at 10gb full and your OSX box is at 100gb full then it will not work.. there are a few comand line comands to force the OSX box to whatever the router is..

Sornson...a son of Sorn. lvl 56 Cleric
